Environmental Distributed Acoustic Sensing

Distributed Acoustic Sensing, or DAS, is a technology for detecting changes in strain on an optical fiber. MoMacMo has used DAS to monitor environmental strain signals from a glacier on Mt Meager in British Columbia, Canada. This information can be used to monitor the health of the glacier and to predict potentially hazardous conditions.​

Geophysical datasets can be very large, reaching PetaBytes in size. MoMacMo has developed cloud-native techniques for efficiently storing and analyzing geophysical datasets in the cloud. MoMacMo participates in standards organizations to share this technology as open source.

Geophysical Sensors for Internet of Things (IoT)

IoT, or Internet of Things, is a technology for connecting large numbers of sensors together to form potentially global networks. MoMacMo is investigating low cost IoT sensors for monitoring vibration and strain. Strain and vibration sensing networks can be used to detect and predict geologic hazards such as landslides, floods, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions.​
